Attitudes to women in religion -
Christians
Evangelical protestantsTraditional protestants think that women aren't equal to men in community and should't have roles in the church :
- All Jesus disciples were men - Jesus was a man - St paul said "she must be silent" in church - Its traditional to have male leaders |
CatholicsCatholics believe women are equal in society but should't be clergy in church :
- both men and some are created in "the image of God" - God created man and woman at the same time - Only men can be priests because they are meant to represent Jesus who was a man - Catholics are taught to see men and women as equals |
Modern protestantsModern Protestants think that women are completely equal in community and in Church (but can't be bishops) :
- "There is neither jew nor greek , slave nor free , male nor female you are all one in christ Jesus" - "Made in the image of God" - Jesus showed himself to a women when he was first resurrected - Jesus treated women as his equals in the bible |
Jewish
Orthodox JewsWomen aren't equal to men in religion as they have different roles women are expected to look after the home and children and men have to provide for the family
- These are teachings from the rabbis and talmud - The mitzvot only apples to men - Women can't be witnesses in the jewish court ( bet din ) - God intended roles to be like this |
Reform JewsWomen and men have completely equal rights :
- Teachings of the talmud need updating - "Made in the image of God" - Both are created at the same time in the creation story - Why would God prefer men to women ? - Believe that the torah is only an interoperation not the actual word of God - Believe Judaism should be a modern religion |
Influence of Media -
The vicar of Dibely deals with the controversial issue of women in the church this is how this has been done :
- A women Vicar is initially treated with suspicion and resistance by many members of the church
- One member makes the point that the gospels were written by men
- One member said he didn't want this church used as an experiment
- Some people have a problem with a women vicar but it turns out many do not so she is allowed to stay
- Very few religious arguments are posed in vicar of Dibley apart from the gospels are written by men
- Treatment of Christains seems fair in the vicar of Dibley because both sides are portrayed
- It made light of issues however in a comical way which some Christians may have found offensive because they are important issues to them
