Why do we need laws ?
There are four main reasons why laws are needed -
- Humans have to live together and in order for society to function well we need rules so people can't just do as they please if it affects others negitivly
- People can be given rewards in society such as making sure businesses pay people for work they do
- They protect vulnerable members of society from dangerous criminals
- It keeps people organised without laws society would be too unorganised and therefore could't function

Drugs and Alcohol -
Both Christians and Jews have different points of view on whether we should be able to use drugs and alcohol -
Christians -
Drugs - All disagree- It is against the law and Christians should follow the law
- St Pauls teaching - the body is a temple - Drugs can alter the mind further away from God |
AlcoholAccepted in moderation because :
- Jesus turned water to wine in a miracle - The holy communion for most Christians involves drinking wine "drink this all of you in remembrance of me " - Jesus drank wine during his life - As long as people aren't drinking too much and rant addicted its not seen as a moral issue Not accepted at all because : - The body is a temple and we should't pollute it with alcohol - When Noah was drunk he brought shame on his family ( Bible warns against it ) - It could cause social and health problems - Some Christians may choose against working in a pub because of these reasons and instead focus on helping people with addiction |
Jews -
Drugs - All disagree- The torah teaches youth who steal meat and wine from their father are sinful
- Using drugs means they are distracted from devoting themselves to God - Using drugs may prevent people following the mitzvot correctly - the quote " You shall be holy " means you should't harm your body with drugs and alcohol |
Alcohol - In moderation- Wine is used n many Jewish religious rituals
- Being drunk is condemned by the torah but drinking is not - " made in the image of God " means they should only drink in moderation so not to damage their bodies - The tenakh praises wine ( gladness ) |
